Blood Tests for Pets
Just like with people, blood tests are an important diagnostic and pre-anaesthetic screening tool for pets. At Vets in Cranbourne, we recommend regular blood testing for dogs and cats to help identify potential health concerns early, assess their suitability for anaesthesia, and diagnose illnesses when they aren’t feeling their best.
Why Are Blood Tests Important for Pets?
Pets can’t always show us when something is wrong, making blood tests an essential tool for detecting hidden health issues. Regular blood screening for dogs and cats supports:
- Identifying illnesses early, before symptoms appear.
- Minimising anaesthetic risks with pre-screening.
- Diagnosing the cause of illness when pets are unwell.
- Monitoring recovery and adjusting treatments as needed.
A blood panel for dogs and cats provides information such as:
- Organ function: including the liver, kidneys, and pancreas
- Enzyme levels: indicating potential muscle inflammation or damage
- Red and white blood cell counts: revealing signs of anaemia, infection, inflammation, or immune response
- Hormonal imbalances and diseases: such as thyroid disorders, diabetes, or infections
- Blood clotting factors: abnormalities that could cause bleeding issues or affect wound healing
When Might Your Pet Need a Blood Test?
Circumstances when pet blood tests are recommended include:
- Routine Health Screenings: Regular blood tests help detect illness or decreased organ function before pets become unwell. This is especially vital for older pets. We advise yearly blood tests for pets, increasing to twice a year from age 7–9 or if any health concerns arise.
- Pre-Anaesthetic Screening: Pre-surgery blood tests assess anaesthetic risks. At Vets in Cranbourne, we recommend all patients receiving anaesthesia undergo blood testing unless they have done so recently.
- Monitoring Chronic Conditions: Regular veterinary blood tests assist in tracking the effectiveness of treatment and managing side effects for pets with ongoing health issues.
When Your Pet Is Ill
Blood tests play a critical role in diagnosing health problems when your pet is unwell, not just as a preventative measure. If your pet is showing signs like lethargy, vomiting, loss of appetite, or unusual behaviour, blood screening at Vets in Cranbourne can uncover the underlying cause of their illness.
How Are Blood Tests Performed?
Pet blood tests are quick, straightforward, and minimally invasive. Our veterinarian will:
- Shave a small patch on your pet’s leg or neck
- Sterilise the area
- Draw a small blood sample
We process samples with in-house analysers for quick pre-anaesthetic screening and diagnostic results. For more detailed testing, samples are sent to an external pathology lab. The procedure is usually brief and causes minimal discomfort for most pets.

What Our Vets in Cranbourne Pet Owners Really Think
EXCELLENT Based on 212 reviews Posted on Sarina BirchwoodTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Vets in Cranbourne are the best!! The staff are so caring and attentive to all variety of pets (and human) needs and everyone clearly loves animals so much it shows in their practiceevery day. Originally (17 yrs ago) we picked this practice for cost but soon found the owner had kelpies and loved our dog, although it changed hands many years ago we never really noticed as the staff provide the same love for our dogs every year. My pet hurt her foot, and unlike other practices who would X-ray immediately, they took the time to examine her properly and suggest we wait a day or so before X-ray and give anti inflammatory to see if she gets better or worse. Rather than charge us hundreds for unnecessary services they provide the correct care and booked a follow-up to ensure she had improved rather than declined (at which point they would have done as needed). To me vetinary care is more about just the medical, it's about feeling like your pet matters, even if only during your 15 minutes and their whole team does that so well. They go above and beyond everytime.Posted on Janet OlsenTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Great vet they did a fantastic job desexing my dog, very caringPosted on Laurinda MunroeTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I honestly can't thank Vets in Cranbourne enough. When my cat fell seriously ill, a nearby vet cancelled my appointment simply because I was five minutes late, despite already knowing, based on what I’d told them, that his condition was critical. I didn’t even know how bad it was at the time, but they should have. I was panicked, heartbroken, and desperate. I called around frantically and found these guys and even though they didn’t have an open slot, they squeezed me in within 15 minutes, understanding how urgent my cat’s condition was. From that moment, everything changed. They didn’t hesitate. They took him in immediately and explained that because of the emergency surgery he needed along with overnight monitoring he’d have to be transferred to a hospital, only because it was already late in the day and close to closing time and wanted teg best for him. They prepped him without delay, contacted the emergency clinic directly, and handled the entire transition seamlessly. I didn’t have to repeat a thing or carry the stress on my own. They even arranged for him to return to them the next morning for aftercare, to help reduce the costs for me. If they hadn’t acted so quickly and selflessly, my boy wouldn’t have made it through the night. The other vet had rescheduled his appointment to the next day… and he never would’ve survived the wait ): During aftercare, they kept me constantly updated with photos and messages, gave him endless cuddles, and did everything they could to keep him comfortable and calm. They’ve been incredible every step of the way. You can tell they genuinely care—not just about animals, but about the people who love them too. I’ll never forget what they did for us. This isn’t just a vet clinic. This is where you go when you want real compassion, professionalism, and people who will fight for your pet like it’s their own.Posted on Deborah KennedyTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Have been seeing Dr. George for several years. My dogs have always felt comfortable with him and his team, never had any issues. Always excited to see friendly faces even in hard circumstances. I love how much the whole team care for my dogs as if they were their own.Posted on MeganTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I could not recommend this clinic more! Both the vets and nurses are so compassionate, and always listen to my concerns no matter how silly. The care they show my dog is like he is their own. I trust them completely with his care no matter the situation. Dr George is always extremely respectful of my preferences while providing the upmost care and recommendations fort dogs care. He takes the extra time to explain things to me and he or the nurses often even call or text to follow up how your pet is doing after a visit/procedure. The nurses (especially Megan, Taylor, and others Alysha) have worked so hard with me to work towards my dog becoming comfortable with nail trims, and they respect my and my dogs limits. With their support, my dog has gone from complete inability to settle in nail trims, to me being able to complete them at home. I now travel to see the team despite not living in the area, and it is worth the drive every time for their support and care.Posted on Geoff HallTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Our Border Collie Lenny was so compassionately cared for by Dr Janice & all the staff today, I can’t speak more highly of their wonderfully caring attitudes right up till his passing today. Can thoroughly recommend all the team who made a totally devastating day much more bearablePosted on Kim GTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Drs George and Janice and the team are absolutely fabulous!
